Growing up in the foster care system, that dream seemed far away, but now Annie's dream may be coming true. A friend she met in an online book group wants to retire and has offered Annie a fresh start managing her little bookstore. Believing the opportunity is an answer to prayer, Annie packs her suitcase and moves to Red Leaf, Wisconsin. The residents of Red Leaf welcome Annie into the fold…everyone except the bookstore owner’s son, Jesse Kent. On Mexican Time: A New Life in San Miguel, Hörb...

When Los Angeles novelist Tony Cohan and his artist wife Masako visited central Mexico one winter, they fell under the spell of a place where the pace of life is leisurely, the cobblestone streets and sun-splashed plazas are enchanting, and the sights and sounds of daily fiestas fill the air. Awakened to needs they didn't know they had, they returned to California, sold their house, and cast off for a new life in San Miguel de Allende. On Mexican Time is Cohan's passionate, evocatively written memoir of how he and his wife found a new home - and a new lease on life - in this charming 16th century hill town.  In an alternately humorous and poignant narrative, Cohan recounts how they absorb the town's sensual ambience, eventually find and refurbish a crumbling 250-year-old house, and become entwined in the endless drama of Mexican life. From peso devaluations and water shortages to the local legend of a man who was "killed twice" and the romantic entanglements of their handyman, On Mexican Time captures the indelible characters, little tragedies, and curious incidents of life in a distinctive Mexican town. At the same time it enfolds listeners into the delights of one of the world's most desirable travel destinations.Brimming with mystery, joy, and hilarity, On Mexican Time is a stirring, seductive celebration of another way of life - a tale of Americans who, finding a home in Mexico, find themselves anew. 1. Lisbon: Apartments for Ageing in Place
26,90 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

Alvalade district in Lisbon is presented as an example on how to become an age-friendly neighborhood to deal with a new demographic reality: Portugal is the 5th most aged society in the world (until 2050 only the age groups above 65 are expected to grow). Providing housing conditions for the elderly to age in place, at the city center of Lisbon where they've always lived is urgent, especially because most people prefer to age in place, in their home and friendly neighborhood, instead of moving out into an institution like a nursing home. Based on case studies, the author shows, proposes and discusses how to refurbish the existing apartment buildings in order to become age-friendly, allowing its residents to stay and age in place. Small scale interventions are presented and discussed, turning the normal apartment building into an assisted living facility for the coexistence of different generations. A similar approach is presented and discussed towards the urban space around these selected buildings, developing small scale urban design solutions necessary for an age-friendly Lisbon, in a human-friendly urban environment.
